Tobin Lake

Tobin Lake is a massive, and incredibly popular fishing and recreational lake a short distance NE of Nipawin and 103km NE of Melfort. The west and north side of the lake are accessible from Highway 123. Highway 255 provides access to the south-west corner and the Resort Village of Tobin Lake.

There are multiple campgrounds, resorts, outfitters, lodges, a bible camp, and a resort village located on the lake.

The Resort Village of Tobin Lake has a boat launch, marina, beach, restaurant, store, and several campgrounds/cabin rentals.

The Nipawin & District Regional Park is located on the river portion of the lake and has a boat launch, boat rentals, splash park, day use areas, and a really pretty trout pond.

Tobin Lake is one of the most popular fishing destinations in the province. Barbless hooks are mandatory on the lake, and there are lake specific restrictions on northern pike and walleye on the lake.

A huge variety of fish can be found in Tobin Lake including: Walleye, Lake Sturgeon, Sauger, Goldeye, Northern Pike, Cisco, Longnose Sucker, Lake Whitefish, Burbot, White Sucker and Yellow Perch.

The word record ice fishing record for walleye (8.3 kg) was set on Tobin Lake by Father Mariuz Zajac in 2005.

The lake was formed by the construction of the E.B. Campbell Dam in 1963.

The entire lake and the marshes to the west are part of the Tobin Lake (SK 099) Important Bird Area. Notable bird species include tundra swans, american white pelicans, bonaparte's gulls, and ring-billed gulls.

William Thorburn

Tobin Rapids were flooded when the reservoir was backed up by the E. B. Campbell Dam in 1962. They were cited as Thobin Rapids on Fleming's 1880 map. Thobin and Tobin are both contactions of Thorburn, after William Thorburn, a Scot who built a post on the Saskatchewan River where it met the Petaigan River.
